WEBINAR: Taking out the Trash — Plastics Design for the End-of-Life
Abstract Nothing lasts forever. Great products might not last forever, but they usually last a long time. But no matter how great the product is, there will come a point in time where a thing no longer has any value. It then becomes waste. To be thrown in the trash. And then what? How do […]
WEBINAR: Medical Plastics: Making the Right Choice
Abstract This presentation will include important design parameters that should be considered when specifying a plastic for a medical device. It will also recommend resources for aiding you during the selection process. The interrelationships between polymer structure and physical properties will be highlighted as well as polymer classifications. Examples of medical devices will be included […]
Medical Plastic Division – APRIL 2021 – Virtual Technical Forum & Networking Event
Virtual ConferenceSustainability is to protect our natural environment, human and ecological health, while driving innovation and not compromising our way of life. It also brings social progress and an increase in quality of life across the globe. In simplest terms sustainability is about our children, grandchildren and the world we will leave them i.e. Next generation.
Three pillars of sustainability:
1. Circular economy (CE) – Reduce - Reuse - Recycle are the key factors in sustainability. It is a concept that turns goods at the end of their service life into resources for others, closing loops in industrial ecosystems, minimizing the waste, reducing the amount of non-renewal feedstocks while increasing the physical and aesthetic attributes of a product and following sustainable methods.
2. People – People want to feel good about the products they purchase. Part of that is sustainability - simply, they want to buy “something green” because it makes them feel like they are contributing to the environment and society for the young and next generation. Sustainability is the new normal. The awareness for sustainable products is growing, and companies benefit because of the growing demand for environmentally friendly products. 3. Environment – It is our responsibility to conserve natural resources and protect global ecosystems to support health and wellbeing, now and in the future.
The long-term goal is to create a circular economy in which most of the plastic waste can be reused in a high-quality and quantity with the help of suitable compounding technologies and value-add product modifiers - whether it is consumer plastics industries, medical device field or rubber industries.
This seminar aims to show factors affecting sustainability, end users understanding about sustainability, challenges in circular economy and possible solutions to overcome some of the challenges. This seminar will clearly show some of the ways companies can make more sustainable plastic products that are not just greener, but also perform better. Compounding and value-add product modifiers makes it possible!
With many environmental issues and debates on sustainability and circular economy there is a growing consumer interest in environmentally friendly sustainable technologies, businesses and products. This growing demand will not solve all of our challenges, but they can have a significant positive impact in utilizing plastics waste for the best.

Medical Plastic Division – July 2021 Virtual Technical Forum & Networking Event
Virtual ConferenceMedical device failures occur more often than we would like. Many times, these failures stem from material, design, or processing issues. During this presentation strategies for fielding robust medical products will be discussed through capabilities and case studies. Topics will include material selection, polymer welding (ultrasonic, laser, IR, spin, etc.), dissimilar material joining, modeling, and characterization. Case studies will be used to show novel applications for small parts, as thin as 0.003 inches, and continuous fiber filled thermoplastics. The audience will gain an understanding of new ways to join and assemble medical devices in a cost effective and reliable manner.

Virtual ConferenceAcetal (POM) is an ideal candidate for many healthcare applications due to inherent properties like dimensional stability, wear resistance, and lubricity. As a homopolymer acetal, Delrin® offers a high degree of crystallinity, which provides excellent mechanical properties. It’s high modulus makes it one of the stiffest and strongest unreinforced engineering polymers available. With the need for sustainable solutions becoming more critical, things like recyclability and light-weighting are also key benefits. In addition, Delrin® is now available with Renewably Attributed (RA) options, which perform and process identical to their fossil fuel based offsets. This talk will highlight the previous concepts and cover a healthcare case study.
