SUMMARY:Medical Plastics Division Webinar - Shape Memory Polyurethane Foams for Embolic Occlusion
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are a versatile class of biomaterials that can be used for biomedical applications\, such as minimally-invasive embolic occlusion procedures. Their ability to transition from a compact\, catheter-deliverable form to an expanded structure under physiological conditions enables precise deployment within the body. \nIn relation to vascular embolization and aneurysm sac filling\, SMP-based polyurethane foams that are fabricated by the team at Shape Memory Medical Inc.\, are shown to promote stable clot formation\, tissue integration\, and progressive healing. These properties position SMPs as a promising solution for improving clinical outcomes in endovascular therapies. \nSpeaker info:\nMarziya Hasan\, PhD.\, Sr. Manager\, Chemistry\nShape Memory Medical\, Inc. \nBio: Dr. Marziya Hasan is a materials engineering leader specializing in polymer chemistry and medical device development. She currently serves as Senior Manager of Chemistry at Shape Memory Medical\, Inc.\, where she leads engineering teams\, scales advanced shape memory polymer technologies\, and helps drive R&D-to-manufacturing transfer for Class III medical products. She earned her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Texas A&M University and holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Texas Lutheran University. She is an inventor on two U.S. patents with numerous peer-reviewed publications. She has also served as a Co-Investigator on multiple grants funded by the National Institutes of Health. \nDr. Hasan is also a part-time lecturer in Chemical and Materials Engineering at San Jose State University and an active professional volunteer\, serving on the Board of Directors for various organizations such as the Society of Plastics Engineers – Golden Gate Section and Silicon Valley Engineering Council. \n  \nRSVP

SUMMARY:Happy Hour Speaker Series: Medical Grade Polymers for Non-Implantable Applications
DESCRIPTION:Featuring: Scott Taylor \nWednesday\, June 10\, 2026\, 6:00p – 7:00p Eastern (3:00p – 4:00p Pacific) \n\nRSVP\n\nAgenda: \n6:00 Welcome / Introductions / Review Session Format \n6:05 Introduce our featured speaker\, Scott Taylor \n6:30 Begin Q&A & continue “Happy Hour” discussion \n7:00 Wrap up and Thanks to all for participating\, especially Scott Taylor! \nTitle: Medical Grade Polymers for Non-Implantable Applications: Standard Development \nAbstract: The term “medical grade” lacks a consistent industry definition\, creating communication gaps between suppliers and device manufacturers. This session presents a proposed ASTM standard guide establishing uniform terminology and evaluation criteria for non-implantable polymers—aimed at improving material transparency\, comparability\, and consistency to enhance device quality and patient safety. \nSpeaker info:\nDr. Scott Taylor\nPoly-Med\, Inc. \nBio: \nDr. Scott Taylor is the Chief Technology Officer at Poly-Med and specializes in material selection and medical device design. He has worked on development teams for more than twenty marketed medical devices and is experienced in the creation of novel materials and processes\, product design and development\, advanced manufacturing services\, application and development of intellectual property\, as well as physical and chemical testing protocols. \nHis 10-year involvement with ASTM includes the development and maintenance of standards within committees F04 (Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices) and F42 (Additive Manufacturing Technologies)\, including chairing the joint group for absorbable polymeric materials and test methods. \nDr. Taylor has undergraduate degrees in physics and mechanical engineering from Furman University and Clemson University\, respectively\, and completed his doctorate in Bioengineering from Clemson University. Through his tenure\, Dr. Taylor has published numerous papers and conference abstracts\, several book chapters\, and is inventor for more than 25 US and international patents. In addition to his position at Poly-Med\, he maintains an appointment as adjunct faculty of Bioengineering at Clemson University.

SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn Speaker Series: Scientific Storytelling and how NOT to lose your Audience
DESCRIPTION:I have been a member of Toastmasters International since 2007 and have obtained Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) status\, the highest level of educational achievement and something less than 1% of Toastmasters worldwide achieve. \n\n\n\nI have stood in front of hundreds of audiences — as a PhD Chemist and a Distinguished Toastmaster. I’ve watched brilliant researchers lose a room full of people who genuinely wanted to listen — I am guilty of having done this myself. \nHow do you avoid this? Before you explain what you found\, tell your audience why they should care. \nThat single resequencing — relevance first\, evidence second — is what separates presenters who inform from presenters who move people to action. \nIt’s not a communications trick. It’s respect for your audience’s attention. \nTo do it well\, you need to do one thing first: understand exactly who is in the room and what keeps them up at night. What decisions are they trying to make? What would change for them if your work succeeded? \nThe term I use to describe myself is “Scientific Storyteller” and you can be one too. \n\nRSVP\n\nAbout John Skabardonis\nJohn was responsible for Technical Marketing to the Electronics & Electrical industry in the Americas\, before retiring from Covestro in Aug. 2025. He worked at Bayer\, GE Plastics and Covestro in the US for 35+ years\, in roles ranging from R&D\, to Marketing\, Marketing Communications and Technical Marketing. \nJohn enjoys public speaking & refers to himself as a scientific storyteller. Fascinated by the rapid evolution of technology\, he is focused on materials and processes which empower this evolution. He is also intensely interested in circularity\, in order to maximize resource utilization. \nJohn is a board member of the SPE Pittsburgh Section. He is also a member of the National Speakers Association\, a Distinguished Toastmaster\, and a member of the Industrial Designers Society of America. \nOptimist Consulting\, LLC \njohn@optimistconsulting.biz \nwww.linkedin.com/in/JohnSkabardonis \n412.277.7434
